Life Isn't Always Fair

Darlene, my mother-in-law, is one of the kindest people I know and she is always taking care of other people.  When I think about the kind of Grandma that every kid should have, Darlene comes to mind. She loves to bake, say yes to anything the kids ask for or want to do, and she truly enjoys spending time with her grandchildren. On February 10th, Darlene, a two-time breast cancer survivor, had her yearly cancer check up and was told she was "good to go" for another year.  Less than two weeks later, she was at the doctor getting over a quart of fluid removed from her lungs.  A week later she found out that she has Stage IV cancer, which is in her lungs.  She also has spots on her bones.  Darlene will be getting treatments that may help to slow the progression of the disease.

Brenna and Brody know that Nana has cancer again, but they really don't understand what that means. After Darlene told Brenna and Brody, Brody came marching in the house and exclaimed, "Nana has cancer!" We had to explain to him that we usually don't use an excited tone of voice when talking about cancer.  We are hoping the treatments do the trick without causing Darlene to have too many side effects.  I have been so blessed to have my own grandma in my life for so many years and I want the same for Brenna and Brody.
